Rules for Footgolf

Footgolf combines the best parts of football and golf to create a fun, accessible sport for everyone. If you’re looking to try Footgolf for the first time, it helps to know some basic rules to make the most of your experience. At Bridgend Golf & FootGolf, we provide an enjoyable environment for players of all ages, and our guide here will introduce you to the essential rules so you’re ready to play like a pro!

Basic Rules for Playing Footgolf

In Footgolf, the objective is straightforward: kick a football from the starting point into a special oversized hole in as few kicks (strokes) as possible. While simple to pick up, there are a few basic Footgolf rules to keep the game fair and fun.

1. Kick Off from the Tee Area

Each hole starts with a kick from a designated tee area. The first player takes aim and kicks the ball toward the hole, aiming to cover as much ground as possible. Like in golf, Footgolf rules state that players should wait until it's their turn to kick, maintaining the flow of the game.

2. Turn Order Based on Distance

In Footgolf, the player farthest from the hole always kicks next, keeping the game orderly and strategic. This approach requires each player to carefully plan their next move, aiming for the shortest path while navigating obstacles.

3. Out-of-Bounds Penalties

If the ball goes out of bounds, Footgolf rules impose a one-stroke penalty. Players resume from the spot where the ball last crossed the boundary line, adding a challenge for those aiming for a perfect score. Avoiding penalties requires precision and control, making Footgolf a great test of skill.

4. Respect the Fairway and Greens

Like traditional golf, Footgolf relies on respect for the course. Players should avoid damaging the grass, especially near the greens and fairways. Since Footgolf uses larger holes, these are typically placed away from golf greens, but respecting the landscape keeps the course enjoyable for all.

5. Scoring in Footgolf

Scoring in Footgolf mirrors golf. Each kick counts as a stroke, and the player with the fewest strokes at the end of the game wins. Whether you’re playing for fun or keeping serious track, knowing Footgolf scoring basics adds an extra layer of enjoyment to your game.

Essential Etiquette in Footgolf

Beyond basic rules, Footgolf also has its own etiquette guidelines:

  • Stay Quiet: When another player is kicking, stay quiet to avoid distraction.

  • Play Quickly: Keep the game moving by taking your shot without long delays.

  • Respect Other Players: Encourage fellow players and avoid interfering with their kicks.
