Footgolf: How to Play

Footgolf combines the best parts of football (soccer) and golf, creating a fun, accessible game that anyone can enjoy. Whether you’re playing solo, with friends, or with family, Footgolf offers an exciting way to spend time outdoors. At Bridgend Golf & FootGolf, we welcome players of all ages and experience levels, and here’s everything you need to know to get started with Footgolf!

What is Footgolf?

Footgolf is a sport where players kick a football into a series of specially designed holes on a golf course, aiming to reach each hole in as few kicks as possible. The rules and scoring follow a similar structure to traditional golf, but the game is much simpler to learn and play—no clubs or tees required!

Essential Footgolf Rules

Here’s a quick overview of the key Footgolf rules to help you understand the basics and start playing right away:

  1. Kick Off from the Tee

Just like in golf, each hole in Footgolf begins with a kick from a designated tee area. Stand behind the tee line, take aim, and kick toward the target hole.

  2. Aim for the Hole in Fewest Kicks

The main goal is to kick the ball into the hole using as few kicks as possible. Each kick counts as a stroke, and the player with the fewest strokes at the end of the course wins the game.

  3. Follow the “Furthest First” Rule

After the initial kick, the player whose ball is furthest from the hole kicks next. This rotation continues until each player has completed the hole.

  4. Avoid Out-of-Bounds

Like in golf, Footgolf has out-of-bounds areas, marked on the course map or with signs. If your ball lands out of bounds, you’ll take a one-stroke penalty and resume play from where it left the course.

How to Play Footgolf at Bridgend Golf & FootGolf

Playing Footgolf at Bridgend is easy, with a well-designed course that balances fun and challenge. Here’s a quick guide on how a typical game unfolds:

  1. Prepare for the Game: Bring comfortable athletic shoes (no football boots with studs) and your own football if you prefer. Our course offers footballs for use as well.

  2. Start at the Tee: Gather your group, decide the order of play, and start by kicking the ball toward the hole from the tee line.

  3. Navigate Each Hole: As you play through each hole, keep track of your strokes and avoid out-of-bounds zones. Each hole is unique, so plan your shots to avoid obstacles and stay on course.

  4. Finish with the Fewest Kicks: Count your strokes at each hole, aiming to complete the course with the lowest score.

Footgolf Tips for Beginners

Whether you’re a seasoned football player or new to both football and golf, here are some tips to make your game more enjoyable:

  • Aim Carefully: Unlike regular football, accuracy is more important than power. Aim for control over distance, especially on longer holes.

  • Use Shorter Kicks for Precision: In Footgolf, close-range kicks help keep the ball on target, so take your time and focus on precision.

  • Respect the Course: Footgolf is played on a golf course, so avoid running or sliding on greens to keep the course in good condition.

Why Try Footgolf?

Footgolf is a fantastic game for all ages, combining the fun of football with the strategic play of golf. It’s a great way to stay active, enjoy time outdoors, and share a laugh with friends or family.
